In response to COVID-19 and School Closures-Principal

“Given all the limitations, challenges, and risks, Bethany Higher Secondary School, in the event of a prolonged school closure which is likely, takes this bold step to digitalize our learning environment with the best of our resources and abilities.”

Dear Students, Parents, and concerned adults,

With COVID-19 continuing to spread, the scale of the challenge in front of us is truly overpowering. Every aspect of our life has been affected by this crisis and sustaining our children’s education has been and should be at the forefront of our mind as a responsible citizen. Given the current pandemic, it is also our shared responsibility to be hugely concerned about our student’s education and their well-being.

As a school and taking the utmost pride in being an educator, we are very anxious about the rapid developments in how the educational system is going remotely online, but I encourage you to remain calm yet vigilant. There have been many discussions about moving teaching, learning, and assessment activities online. The school, however, acknowledges that there are many challenges associated with such a move considering the digital infrastructure/resource that we have and parent’s/student’s inaccessibility to the internet & technology (to name a few). We need to be sensitive to these challenges before embarking fully on such an endeavor.

However, in the words of Aparna Mudi who wrote “Teaching in times of Coronavirus” for livewire reminds us of the urgency to take a step forward digitally. She writes “being an ostrich and waiting for this to pass away instead of getting prepared is the worst thing educators can do now.” We must make the best of this situation and the only way that can be done is through self-innovation and breaking the norms that many of us have been avoiding. Online education and technology are here to stay. It is not the future – it is here, in the present. Since the last month, the world has been under lockdown because of the global pandemic of coronavirus. It is real, we are here. We must go online. Whether you like it or not – educators need to do it. We will need to adapt.

That said, and given all the limitations, challenges, and risks, Bethany Higher Secondary School, in the event of a prolonged school closure which is likely, takes this bold step to digitalize our learning environment with the best of our resources and abilities.

In order to facilitate the teaching-learning and ensuring there is continuity in the learning of our students, the School is making an endeavor to provide e-content (Worksheets /Assignments / Study Material/Resource Links) accessible through our website and through our WhatsApp support. While we understand how real-time platforms such as Google classrooms or the Zoom is a far reach at this juncture. We have taken this small initiative of creating an online learning portal that is easily accessible through a smartphone with internet connectivity. The online learning portal will provide resources such as Worksheets, Assignments, Projects, etc. for the students. This seems like the only feasible solution at the moment that is practically possible in a situation like ours.  The whole aim of our online learning portal is to keep our students engaged in meaningful activity and helping them incline more towards critical analysis and self-motivated education.

Please be assured that we will try our level best to monitor and update the Resources on a weekly/monthly basis to engage and motivate the students. I believe that there should be no limits to when and where you can learn, and we are committed to supporting students in facilitating distance and online learning at all times.

I look forward to your wholehearted Support and Cooperation from each one of you.  Let us work together to overcome this pandemic. It is only a matter of time that we will be back to our bustling classrooms and regular school life! The Online Learning Portal will be up and running until we hear clear directives from the government and concerned authorities.

While I hope and wish that you take the best care of yourself and your family, I urge you to ensure that our children remain engaged in school textbooks and other productive activities during the lockdown.

As we all remember and salute to all the frontline workers risking their own lives during this global pandemic, I wish you all healthy and productive times ahead!!

Sincerely,
